Instead, Spielberg chose James Mangold, the director of such diverse films as Logan, Ford v. Ferrari, and Girl, Interrupted, to helm the movie in 2020. After being replaced by Jonathan Kasdan and then Dan Fogelman on the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny script in 2018, David Koepp, the author of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, returned to the project in 2019. Koepp, however, left the director’s chair as well as Spielberg did, explaining:
“When James Mangold entered, he merits the opportunity to try his hand at it. With Steven, I had created multiple iterations. And after Steven left, it felt appropriate to let Jim write it himself or have someone else write it from his perspective.
