Kim Zolciak-Biermann, the former Real Housewives of Atlanta star, has filed for divorce from her husband, NFL alum Kroy Biermann, after 11 years of marriage. The couple shares four children, and the divorce comes as they face financial issues. TMZ reported that the couple owes more than $1 million in unpaid taxes to the IRS and owes the state of Georgia $15,000 in unpaid taxes for 2018.
Details of the Divorce Filing
According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, Zolciak filed for divorce on April 30, citing the marriage as “irretrievably broken with no hope of reconciliation.” She has requested primary physical custody of the children and joint legal custody. The reality star also requested to legally restore her maiden name.
Zolciak and Biermann’s Financial Woes
The couple’s financial troubles seem to have been a major contributor to the split. The legal documents state that Zolciak and Biermann owe $1.1 million in unpaid taxes, interest, and penalties to the IRS from 2013, 2017, and 2018. They also reportedly owed $15,000 in unpaid taxes to the state of Georgia for 2018.
Their home in the Atlanta area also went into foreclosure in February. Despite their financial issues, the couple appeared to be happy, and Zolciak even joked to E! News in November that the secret to their happy marriage was “lots of sex.”
The Couple’s Relationship
Zolciak and Biermann met at a charity event when Bravo cameras were rolling in 2010. They wed the following year and starred in their own spinoff, Don’t Be Tardy, which ended in 2020. The couple has three children together, Kroy Jagger, Kash, and twins Kane and Kaia. Biermann also legally adopted Zolciak’s two daughters, Brielle and Ariana, from her previous relationships.
