The famous quote from Nick Fury, “Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye,” is true. It’s a statement from Captain America: The Winter Soldier that was included to demonstrate how the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and spymaster prefers to keep even his closest associates at a distance (and then lost a lot of its coolness factor when we found out an alien cat clawed out his eye in Captain Marvel). That Fury has some fairly serious trust issues was probably the point. But those survival instincts could come in very handy in the upcoming Unveiling Secret Invasion series.
Sam L. Jackson will reprise his role as Fury in Secret Invasion, one of the most enigmatic Disney+ projects to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. Fury will come back to Earth to uncover a plot being carried out by a band of renegade Skrulls. The shape-shifting aliens that Fury and Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) helped years ago in Captain Marvel. What is known about Marvel’s Unveiling Secret Invasion is detailed below.

Unveiling Secret Invasion Release Date
On June 21, 2023, Unveiling Secret Invasion release date will make its television debut on Disney+ alone. The six-episode season of the show will follow Nick Fury following the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home and Avengers: Endgame.
Secret Invasion Trailer
The Secret Invasion trailer was initially shown in Comic-Con’s Hall H. But it was officially released during Disney’s D23 Expo 2022. The trailer begins with Nick Fury. Now sporting a full grey beard and without his iconic eye patch, returning to Earth. The teaser shows Fury interacting with various characters, some of whom we recognize.
Talos appears in human form as Ben Mendelsohn. While Don Cheadle returns as James Rhodes, aka War Machine, and Martin Freeman as Agent Everett K. Ross. The trailer also offers a first glimpse of Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke. Who both make their MCU debut in this series. The second trailer for Secret Invasion delves deeper into the show’s plot but surprisingly doesn’t reveal much about the expected villainous Skrulls. It’s clear that the show will be a dark espionage spy thriller. Potentially bringing a different tone to Marvel, much like Andor did for Star Wars.
The trailer shows that Nick Fury is not welcomed back on Earth after his long vacation off-world. With James Rhodes informing him that he’s the most wanted man on the planet. However, Fury still has allies in Talos, Maria Hill, and Olivia Colman’s character, Agent Sonya Falsworth. But, it’s unclear whether all of them can be trusted as there may be Skrulls in disguise among them waiting for their opportunity to strike.
Unveiling Secret Invasion: A Quick Overview
The tone of the show is tremendously gloomy, much darker than anyone could have anticipated, as can be seen in the teaser. The marketing for this show describes it as a psychologically terrifying spy espionage drama with realistic science fiction components.
At D23 last year, Cobie Smulders affirmed the tone of the programme: “This is a gloomier programme. We’ll delve farther into the characters. You’ll never know who people are, and we’ll get to see them in fresh ways. It will be an amazing thriller. They seem Skrull-like. Are they people? It’s going to involve some guesswork.”
Meet the Cast
Samuel L. Jackson, who has made appearances in almost a dozen MCU projects, will finally be the main character in his own story as Nick Fury. He will be accompanied by Ben Mendelsohn, who will reprise his role as the friendly Skrull Talos from his appearances in Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Other familiar MCU actors will also be returning, including Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross.
Meanwhile, the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe project will also introduce new faces to the franchise, such as Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Colman, who will play the role of MI6, an antagonist described by Samuel L. Jackson as “cold-blooded and just relishes being that person.” Emilia Clarke, best known for her role in Game of Thrones, will also join the cast.
